Avoiding the Work From Home Deathtrap

Avoiding the Work from Home Death Trap

When you are ready to become a self employed professional, you should know that as in any other line of work, there are ways that you can seriously hinder your own progress. This is the way it is in any profession and any line of work. The good news, however, is that with the power of the internet, you can use many of the resources available to learn how other professionals have made mistakes. Many of these resources are firsthand narratives, meaning that you are getting the full story from the horse’s mouth. Instead of relying on luck, remember that there is nothing new under the sun. Sometimes, knowing what not to do is more valuable than instruction.

If you read many of the self employed resources that are available online, then one thing you will notice is that many of the people who make mistakes are those who lack time management skills. They think that working from home is all about freedom. While there is some truth to this, it’s also important to remember that you do have to be your own boss. This means that you do, to some extent, have to restrict yourself. There might be some days in which you wish you could just stop early. If you have the feeling, however, that it’s not a good idea, you need to follow your gut instinct.

Another common mistake made by the self employed is that they don’t set boundaries between their personal lives and work lives. If you are working from home, this is something that you really do need to consider. Even if you have children, a spouse, and family obligations, you need to make it clear that while you are working, you cannot be bothered. Think about it this way. When you are at the office, you don’t let your family come visit your every afternoon. Your boss wouldn’t allow it. Working from home should involve the same principles.

If you are ready to become a self employed professional, then you need to understand that others just like you have been down this route before. Instead of making the same mistakes that others have made, you can learn from their mistakes. Use their experience as your own. When you read about the stories of others who have gone into business for themselves, you might realize that you have a personality similar to others. Find out which temptations and behaviors gave them trouble and you will know what to avoid.
