Staying Sane while Self-Employed

10 Ways to Stay Healthy & Keep Your Sanity While Being Self-Employed

There are a lot of benefits to being self-employed. In addition to having more control over your time and the type of work you do, you also have more control over your income. But home business entrepreneurs often fall into the trap of not taking care of themselves which can lead to burnout. Here are ten tips for staying healthy and keeping your sanity when you work from home.

Separate Work from Home – Put your office in a different room in your house; preferably one with a door that you can close to minimize distractions. This prevents your home life from bleeding into your work life and vice versa.

Develop a Morning Routine – When you worked a regular job, you had a certain morning routine you went through that prepared you for your work day. It is a good idea to have a similar routine even though you are self-employed. It will mentally prepare you to start working.

Work a Regular Schedule – Regular office hours prevent you from working yourself to death as well as help you avoid procrastinating. Additionally, it is much easier to get people to respect your work time if you have a regular schedule. It doesn’t have to be the standard 9am to 5pm but it should be something you will adhere to religiously.

Keep Your Work Space Organized – A cluttered space equals a cluttered mind. Keeping your working space organized helps you focus on the task at hand. It will also improve your productivity because you won’t have to hunt for the things you need.

Take Regular Breaks – Refresh yourself by taking a break from work. A good rhythm to get into is to work 50 minutes and then take a ten minute break. Make sure to leave your office for lunch.

Eat Healthy and Exercise – Your overall health contributes to your mental and physical performance. Get regular exercise and eat healthy foods that support your mind and body.

Avoid Letting Work Consume Your Life – You will probably be working more hours especially when you first start your business. However, avoid letting work consume your life by making time for your other interests.

Have a List of Tasks – Avoid unnecessary downtime by keeping a list of things that need to be done. Separate them into three categories: tasks that must be done, tasks you would like to get done, and task you would like to complete but which can wait.

Set Boundaries – When you are self-employed and work from home, your friends and family member will think you are “available” and interrupt you. Lovingly but firmly set clear boundaries for when you are working. It is the only way you’ll get things done.

Get Out and Socialize – As human beings we need human contact. Get away from the home office every once in awhile and socialize with other people. You’ll feel refreshed and renewed.
