Anyone can start a business. To join the ranks of successful entrepreneurs, however, requires a certain mindset. Unfortunately, a large number of people who start a home business do not understand what it takes to build a business that is profitable and enjoyable. As a result, they end up becoming roadblocks to their own success by engaging in behaviors that are counterproductive such as procrastinating or waiting for customers to call them. If you truly want to achieve your goal of being a successful entrepreneur then you must transform yourself into the person who can make it happen.
On the surface this sounds like a strange concept. Rest assured, though, this is not about changing your personality or your morals. It is about identifying the behaviors and habits of successful entrepreneurs that have contributed to their achievements and then adopting some or all of those habits. For example, many home based business owners work a set schedule every day. Even though you decided to work for yourself in order to escape the rigid schedule imposed on you by your employer, working a set schedule, nevertheless, contributes to increased productivity and work life balance.
One way to determine who you must become as a person in order to get where you want to go is to read the biographies of successful entrepreneurs. Typically, they will tell you what they did to achieve their goals and you can often identify the underlying behaviors that helped them. For example, Zig Ziglar frequently cites making a set number of sales calls every day as being a habit that caused him to achieve millions of dollars in sales in his long career as a salesman. In the beginning he didn’t do this and his career suffered for it. After being given this good piece of advice from another salesman, he found his results improved dramatically.
Make no mistake about it. You will need to change yourself in many ways if you want to achieve your goals. However, think of it as evolving into a better version of you. Many of the habits you develop to assist you with growing your business can be applied to other areas of your life. You may be surprised to find that other aspects of your life improve once you make these positive changes. Just remember that successful entrepreneurs are made not born. Keep moving in the direction of your dreams and you’ll get there before you know it.
